Relay for Life

Tioga Middle School Student Council raised money for cancer research by participating in the Grayson County Relay for Life on May 14. We did this in honor of Chalisa, a 7th grader at our school who is a cancer survivor. We even called our team, Team Chalisa!

At the American Cancer Society Relay For Life, our team camped out overnight and took turns walking around the track to raise money and awareness and to help the American Cancer Society save more lives from cancer. Through all of our fund-raisers we were able to raise $2030.00.

Our theme for Relay was "Follow Us To A World With More Birthdays." We made blue shirts (Chalisa's favorite color) and wore them at Relay. We decorated our camp-site like a big birthday party, and celebrated all night!

What happened at Relay?

Chalisa walked the Survivor Lap in her purple shirt! She even got to hold the banner and lead the group! Joining her in honor of our team were Payge's grandfather and Mrs. Dutton, who subs at our school. Both of them are cancer survivors. That lap was followed by the care-giver lap. Mrs. James walked in honor of her father. Mrs. Holcomb walked in honor of her mother-in-law, and Aaron walked in honor of his mom. During the team lap, every team member and our friends and family who joined us at Relay walked together. For the rest of the night, at least two team members had to walk at all times.

At 9:30pm, there was a Luminaria Ceremony. This was very sad. Decorated bags were lit around the track in honor of cancer survivors and in memory of those who lost their lives to cancer. Everyone was silent and all activities & games stopped. It was an emotional time we will never forget.

At 12:00am, was the Fight Back Ceremony. We all got a flag and pledged to fight back against cancer. Another event during the night was the Misster Relay contest where a male team member had to dress up as a girl and walk around with a purse trying to raise money, Nick helped us raise $91.00. We played people mache’ and dressed Mrs. Hamner's exchange student, Michaela, up in newspaper and duct tape. We got pretty far in the Chicken Relay, and won the Hooping it Up Contest! Jaimie and Aaron were definitely the fastest in the backwards lap, and Faith in her wig and cool shoes looked awesome in the “All about the 70s” lap. We all did the limbo lap, and the three-legged lap was harder than it looked. Danielle won the cowboy lap, and Chalisa won the dance contest! We were probably the most enthusiastic team of the night!!! We made it into the final picture and finally made it home about 6:30am. We were exhausted but it was an awesome experience and was definitely for a good cause!
